It is located in the village of Vinje. The church is part of the Vinje parish in the Hardanger og Voss deanery in the Diocese of Bjørgvin. The white, wooden church was built in 1871 by the architect Ole Vangberg. That church was most likely a stave church. In the 1670s, a new log church was built nearby in the village, but not necessarily on the same exact site.
